Key Accomplishments of Hansen Woodland Farm...

As a tool for our own record-keeping, here are the highlights of the key accomplishments and achievements at Hansen Woodland Farm.

Forestry-Related Accomplishments

  • December 2011 -- Developed initial Forest Management Plan.
  • December 2011 -- Received WA DNR Cost-Share for 10.6 acres in northeast section of property for non-commercial thinning, pruning, and slash removal. Work commences.
  • January 2012 -- American Tree Farm System approves Hansen Woodland Farm as a Certified Tree Farm (WA-4462).
  • Spring 2012: Constructed Blue Bird Houses and Bat House as part of Wildlife Enhancements.
  • Spring 2012: Planted 50 pine saplings; 25 larch saplings.
  • May 2012 -- Approved for Classification as Designated Forest Land by Ferry County Assessor. (38.75 acres)
  • Summer/Fall 2012 -- Trail Planning and Development. Conceptualized, graded, and began chipping on 10 trails throughout 40 acres of property.
  • Fall 2012 -- Completed fencing and gate construction along entire property frontage. (Property now 80% fenced.)
  • February 2013 -- Designated Stewardship Forest by WA DNR. Forest Stewardship Plan approved by DNR.
  • February 2013 -- Completed WA DNR Cost-Share work for 10.6 acres. (See pictures of results.)
  • February 2013 -- Completed approximately 20 hours of Forest Stewardship University (WSU Extension Forestry).
  • February 2013 -- Approved for WA DNR Sherman Fuels Cost-Share thinning project on 6.9 acres in northwest section of property.
  • Spring 2012: Planted 25 larch saplings.
  • April 2013 -- Attended 2-Day Firewise Communities Workshop, Spokane, WA.
  • April 2013 -- Approved for a NRCS EQIP Cost-Share thinning, forest health project on 6 acres in southeast section of property.
  • February 2014 -- Dr. Randall Hansen elected President of the Northeast Chapter of the Washington Farm Forestry Association; Dr. Kathy Hansen is elected Ferry County representative to the NE Chapter Board.
  • February 2014 -- Received WA DNR Cost-Share for 7.7 acres in a central section of property for non-commercial thinning, pruning, and slash removal. Work commences.
  • March 2014 -- NRCS archeologist takes pictures of our thinning work to serve as a model for how to accomplish non-invasive, non-soil disturbing pre-commercial thinning.
  • May 2014 -- Completed NRCS EQIP Cost-Share thinning, forest health project, on 6 acres in southeast section of property.
  • Huly 2014 -- Dr. Randall Hansen appointed as a Supervisor for the Ferry Conservation Distict. Volunteer position.
  • March 2015 -- Completed WA DNR Forest Fuels Reduction Cost-Share work on 7.7 acres. (See pictures of results.)
  • Farming-Related Accomplishments

  • Spring 2011 -- Garden fencing reinforced -- and first large-scale garden developed.
  • Spring 2011 -- Outfitted chicken coop and developed two-pen fenced yard.
  • June 2011 -- First set of six young hens established.
  • Fall 2011 -- Greenhouse completed. Experimenting with growing salad greens and kale during cold months, tomatoes in summer/fall.
  • Spring 2012 -- Pallet Chicken Coop designed and built next to garden.
  • Spring 2013 -- Added 17 additional chicks/pullets, including Norwegian Jaerhons and Golden Buffs.
  • Spring 2013 -- Ran electrical from shop to main pasture; finished graveling driveway.
  • Spring 2013 -- Began construction of barn/run-in for main pasture.
  • Summer 2013 -- Adopted rescued Morgan cross gelding; acquired Dun mare.
  • Summer 2013 -- Completed construction of barn/run-in for main pasture.
  • August 2013 -- Approved for a NRCS CSP for developing a native wildflower pollinator habitiat.
  • Other Achievements

  • Spring 2013 -- Established an official branch of the Little Library at Hansen Woodland Farm: Little Free Library of Garden Valley. ("Details here.)
  • Summer 2013 -- Randall Hansen became volunteer firefighter for Ferry/Stevens Counties Joint Fire District 3&8.
  • July 2014 -- Randall Hansen appointed as a Supervisor for the Ferry Conservation District.
