Here's a low-cost and easy-to-build greenhouse planting table that you can construct in one day -- and for under $25 (depending on local costs of materials). This project requires only 5 2 x 4s, 2 wire shelves, fasteners, and glue. The detailed list is below. The 2 x 4s cost me $10, and I was able to find the shelves on clearance for $5 a piece. The other materials I had on hand, so this project only cost me $20 to build. Compare this bench you make yourself to ones you can buy for anywhere from $60 to $100. Probably the most important decision you need to make when building this bench is the height. I chose 32" legs because that's about the height of a temporary bench we're currently using in the greenhouse. Once you cut all the materials, the construction is simple. Start with the table frame, gluing the four pieces together and fastening with nails or screws. Next, attach each of the four legs, fastening them to each corner for extra strength. Next, for additional stability, secure two cross bars on the legs. Flip the bench onto its legs and attach the middle support. Finally, attach the two wire shelves, as shown in the pictures.
Final Thoughts on the Planting BenchFrom this basic design, you can make all sorts of changes, making a two-shelf planting bench with additional materials. You could also shorten the length or make the bench narrower using just one shelf. Finally, we used standard 2 x 4s, but you could increase the longevity by using treated lumber for the construction.
